Workflow Engine

Workflow Engine is the logical service that drives multi-step, role-based business processes inside the PLM system: change requests through approval, release requests through gates, supplier change responses, deviations, and waivers. It encodes the company’s process discipline as executable, auditable flows on top of the data layer.

What it covers

• Process modeling (BPMN-like notation in many PLM tools).
• Task assignment and routing via roles, organization units, and dynamic actor resolution.
• Conditional branching, escalations, and parallel approvals.
• Service tasks and integrations to ERP, CAD, and external services.
• Audit trail and process analytics for cycle-time KPIs.

• Supports the Change Management (ECO/ECN) and Release Management processes.
• Implemented by PLM platforms including Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, and Aras Innovator.
