Classification Schema
Classification Schema is the data object that defines the taxonomy and attribute templates used to organize, search, and reuse parts and documents in a PLM system. Common public schemas include ECLASS, UNSPSC, and ISO 13584 (PLib); most enterprises also maintain internal classification trees on top of those.
What it covers
- Hierarchical class tree with stable codes for industry interchange.
- Per-class attribute templates (e.g. resistance, tolerance, package for resistors).
- Search and reuse queries over classified attributes.
- Master-data governance (one class owner, controlled attribute set).
- External standard alignment (ECLASS, UNSPSC, ISO 13584) for supplier interchange.
Relationships (see sidebar)
- Supports the BOM Management, Supplier Development, and Product Portfolio Planning processes.
- Implemented by PLM platforms including Siemens Teamcenter (Classification), PTC Windchill (Parts Classification), Aras Innovator, Dassault 3DEXPERIENCE, and SAP PLM.
- Conforms to ISO 10007 configuration-management guidance for identifying configuration items.
