AS9100 (Aerospace QMS)

AS9100 (current revision: AS9100D) is the QMS standard for the aviation, space, and defense industries — the sector specialization of ISO 9001 stewarded by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). Certification to AS9100 (or its regional equivalents EN 9100 in Europe and JISQ 9100 in Japan) is effectively a prerequisite for supplying Tier-1 aerospace primes such as Boeing, Airbus, and Lockheed Martin.

Scope

AS9100D adds aerospace-specific requirements on top of ISO 9001: counterfeit-part prevention, configuration management (aligned with ISO 10007), product safety, design verification and validation rigor, supply-chain risk management, on-time delivery as a top-level metric, and human-factor controls. Companion standards AS9110 (MRO) and AS9120 (distributors) extend the framework to maintenance and distribution.

Relationships (see sidebar)

  • Normative for the QMS and CAPA discipline as practiced in aerospace.
  • Succeeds (specializes) ISO 9001 for the aerospace-and-defense sector.
  • Companion to ISO 10007 for configuration management.
