PTC ThingWorx
PTC ThingWorx is PTC’s industrial IoT (IIoT) platform — model-based device connectivity, mashup-based application authoring, and analytics. Acquired in 2013 (~$112M, plus subsequent ColdLight analytics acquisition), ThingWorx is the central platform underneath PTC’s digital-twin and connected-product narrative and an explicit pairing with Windchill for closed-loop digital thread.
Context
ThingWorx provides a Composer authoring environment, a runtime with Things-Templates-and-Properties metadata, native integration with Kepware drivers, edge Microservers (ThingWorx Edge), and analytics models. It is the platform inside PTC’s broader connected-product strategy, often deployed alongside Windchill (engineering data), Kepware (OT connectivity), and Vuforia (AR delivery).
What it implements
- IoT Platform — flagship product in this category.
- Digital Twin — operational and performance twins for connected products.
- Industrial Connectivity through embedded Kepware integration and the Edge Microserver.
Relationships (see sidebar)
- Competes with Siemens Insights Hub in IIoT deals; complementary to but partially overlapping with Mendix for application authoring.
- Often deployed with PTC Windchill (engineering), Kepware (connectivity), and Vuforia (AR).
Vendor
PTC, Inc. (acquired ThingWorx, 2013).
