PTC Vuforia
PTC Vuforia is an augmented-reality (AR) authoring and runtime suite covering industrial use cases: Vuforia Studio for 3D-model-based work-instruction authoring, Vuforia Expert Capture for procedure capture from a subject-matter expert, Vuforia Chalk for remote assistance, and Vuforia Engine as the underlying SDK. PTC acquired the Vuforia AR business from Qualcomm in 2015 (~$65M) and grew it into a flagship of the connected-service / industrial-AR market.
Context
Vuforia distinguishes itself from generic AR SDKs by reusing CAD/PLM data — assembly trees, exploded views, PMI — directly as the authoring substrate. Combined with ThingWorx for live IoT data overlay, it is the visual delivery channel for the digital-twin narrative on the shop floor and in the field.
What it implements
- AR Authoring — the flagship product in this category.
- Field Service Management — AR-delivered work instructions for service and remote-assistance scenarios.
- Visualization — lightweight 3D delivery to AR/VR endpoints.
Relationships (see sidebar)
- Frequently deployed with PTC ThingWorx (live IoT data overlay) and PTC Windchill (CAD source data).
Vendor
PTC, Inc. (acquired Vuforia from Qualcomm, 2015).
