Augmented Reality Authoring
Augmented Reality (AR) Authoring is the logical capability of producing AR experiences for manufacturing, service, training, and sales by reusing CAD geometry, work instructions, and PLM-managed configuration data. Instead of shipping a paper or PDF service manual, the technician sees overlay graphics anchored to the physical asset on a tablet or headset.
What it covers
- 3D content reuse — pulling CAD assemblies and exploded views from PLM into AR scenes.
- Step-by-step procedure authoring with sequencing, cues, and acceptance checks.
- Marker, model-target, and SLAM-based recognition of the physical asset.
- Configuration awareness — the AR experience adapts to the as-built variant.
- Telemetry capture — completion status, dwell time, and error events fed back to ALM/PLM.
Relationships (see sidebar)
- Supports the Service and Maintenance and Manufacturing Execution processes.
- Implemented by systems like PTC Vuforia.
- Builds on JT Visualization / lightweight 3D and consumes PMI Annotations from MBD models.
