IoT Platform
IoT Platform is the logical capability of ingesting, contextualizing, storing, and acting on telemetry from connected products and assets at scale. Industrial IoT (IIoT) platforms add manufacturing-grade context — asset hierarchy (ISA-95), OPC UA modeling, edge orchestration, and direct lines back into PLM/MES — that a generic cloud IoT service does not provide out of the box.
What it covers
- Device connectivity via MQTT, OPC UA, AMQP, REST, and proprietary PLC drivers.
- Asset modeling — twin schemas, hierarchy, and configuration awareness.
- Time-series storage and stream processing for real-time KPIs and alarms.
- Edge runtime for low-latency or air-gapped deployments.
- Application services — dashboards, mashups, AR overlays, and ML pipelines.
Relationships (see sidebar)
- Supports the Service and Maintenance, Manufacturing Execution, and Warranty and Field Feedback processes.
- Implemented by systems like PTC ThingWorx and Siemens Insights Hub.
- Feeds the Digital Twin and closes the Digital Thread from operations back into engineering.
